In Italia

ARTIST’S STATEMENT

Eighteen years of traveling in Italy from the high Alps to inland Sicily, and each time it is harder to leave. Photography is my way sharing these experiences, keeping them fresh and very much alive.

Marvel at the ingenious construction of the stacked-stone roofs on restored medieval houses in Canova. Smell the cool dampness entering that tunnel in Erice. Hear the click of a visitor’s shoes on the stones in the quiet cloisters in Amalfi. Become disoriented at the edge of the piazza in Polizzi Generosa, gazing down onto tiled rooftops far below. Feel the dip in the treads of marble stairs in the duomo in Napoli, worn by thousands of feet over hundreds of years.

To be in places of history and beauty, whether natural or manmade, it sometimes seems impossible not to make beautiful photos, but my goal is to share more than the innate beauty.
My photographs express another way — an Italian way — of experiencing life, blending the past, the present, and hopefully the future in continuum.

Yes, there is innate beauty in these places but for many people this is simply home.
